KC Classic: Larry Nigro
Larry Nigro displays a clear affection for his hometown (as well as an affinity for travel) in his atmospheric charcoal and pastel works.
Inspiration by Ones and Zeroes: Chris Campbell
Campbell, a UMKC graduate, also has an obvious affection for abandoned things — especially cars and buildings — and for close-ups, such as today’s featured image, that become less about the thing being photographed than about its inherent visual qualities.
Striking a Soft Edge: Jeff Olschki
Olschki’s skill is not only in setting a mood, though, but in capturing images that work on the deeper levels of line and curve, light and shadow, tension and balance. There’s a painterly feel to his photography, and not merely because it’s makeup-intensive.
IRONIC TAKE ON EXCESS
Ricky Allman’s paintings fit nicely into the slightly cool off-white austerity of the University of Kansas Art Gallery in Lawrence, Kansas. One can also imagine them looking equally at home on the walls of an Industrial Lights and Magic-designed 23rd-century outer space fortress heavily inspired by the Doge’s Palace in Venice, Italy.
