No Beige Here: Kent Michael Smith

Kent Michael Smith might be a self-described introvert, but his split-level constructions are not designed to blend into anyone’s beige subdivision.

It’s a Noble Gas, Gas, Gas: Willem Volkersz

Willem Volkersz blurs the lines between painting, sculpture, installation and collage in the same way that mid-20th century roadside culture blurred the lines between sculpture, advertising, architecture, kitsch and folk/outsider art.

New Age of Opulence : George Timock

Timock’s works fairly cry out for high ceilings, gilded woodwork and crystal chandeliers, for the sound of string quartets and carriage wheels and whispered palace intrigues. That said, they are perfectly lovely in their present surroundings.

The Building Blocks of Creativity : Cary Esser

It isn’t just the solidity of Esser’s pieces that gives them such a tactile quality. It’s the way in which they resemble puzzles, or construction blocks … or, perhaps, a combination of both.

POPULAR CULTURE PIECES TRANSFORMED

Placed in the same set of rooms, the latest work of Tom Huck and Jesse Small at Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art are successful depictions of their generation’s concerns and touch deep cultural nerves, especially for those of a similar age-group. Both sets of work hold up under close inspection, offering the viewer intricate and symbolic details — political commentary and formal perfection.

Switching the Price Tags: Misty Gamble

The visual moments in this show all come from a previous generation. Gamble’s ceramic figures (including :”Chanel No. 5,” pictured above in detail) and hand-cast high-heeled pumps are all frozen in the mid-20th century. Hairstyles, color schemes, clothing … it’s all so very Camelot.

(ARTKC365) Piecework Memories : Tanya Hartman

Hartman’s chosen materials, media and techniques influence more than the purely visual parts of her art. They also reinforce the idea of life — and of the memories created over a lifetime —as fragile and alterable, things to be constructed and assembled bit by bit.
