The Right Tool for the Job: John Girt

Girt’s work is filled with detail: sometimes telling, sometimes intriguing and always filled with visual interest.

Looking Back at a Life of Art : Barbara Cleary

Cleary’s landscapes and still life works cover both Impressionist and Expressionist territory, pushing color to the forefront. Her landscapes are often punctuated by hues not found in the natural scenery she depicts. Rather than jarring the eye, though, the additions underscore and support the main images and colors in each painting.

Abstracted Explorations: David Gross

Rather than panoramic views of the Flint Hills, the oils and mixed media works in “A Painter’s Journey” offer bright streaks, smears and splatters of color. The closest they get to nature is that the structure of several paintings — the one atop this post among them — is reminiscent of tall stalks of prairie grass.

Mind Matters: Logan Smith

The issue has come up in this space before: Whenever someone is dealing that well with serious medical issues, there’s a natural tendency for the inspirational nature of his or her story to overflow into too-effusive praise. Smith’s art needs no helping hand to stand on its own, however. Were he in perfect health, he would still be a promising young photographer with a bright future.

The Sound of One Symbol Clashing: Jessica McGan

For viewers of any age, McGan’s works (both old and new) offer emotional resonance and visual engagement. They’re as likely to bring people to agreement as to divide them along artistic or ideological lines.

(ARTKC365) Tales Told in Paint: Jenna Tomlin

Tomlin’s art is worth the drive. It’s introspective and expressive, heartfelt and thoughtful, calming and challenging all at once. And Amanda Martin, Gas Light’s owner and director, has used one of Tomlin’s painting to pull off one of the best presentations I’ve seen in a while.

(ARTKC365) Forging Nature: George Rousis

Given freedom and guidance, metal takes all sorts of fanciful shapes under Rousis’ ministrations: from jewelry to sculpture, wall hangings to home furnishings.
