FORM EMPHASIS FROM FRAGMENTS
Three artists represented by the Blue Gallery in Kansas City come from origins of fractured, layered identity that is manifest in their work presented together in a June 2010 exhibition: Aileen Chong, Patricia Kochaver, and Daniel Ochoa provoke thought and emotion with their paintings and pottery. “Mixed Perceptions” is a study in contrasts, as the artists use various media to play on our perceptions.

A DESIRE TO FLY
Paul Flinders creates emotive works that connect with the viewer on a visceral rather than on a logical level. Standing before them, a viewer might have the sensation of warmth emanating from muted colors and soft light. The works might elicit some distant memory of joy, pain, or love, despite their unreality, which is sometimes cartoonish or evokes the extraterrestrial or primordial. Even some of his direct social critiques make an emotional connection through scenes that are sometimes bizarre or otherworldly, sometimes romantic or absurd.
IRONIC TAKE ON EXCESS
Ricky Allman’s paintings fit nicely into the slightly cool off-white austerity of the University of Kansas Art Gallery in Lawrence, Kansas. One can also imagine them looking equally at home on the walls of an Industrial Lights and Magic-designed 23rd-century outer space fortress heavily inspired by the Doge’s Palace in Venice, Italy.
