Lowrance’s works keep drawing the eye back … and in. Perhaps it’s something voyeuristic, akin to whatever it is that leads us to people-watch and make up stories about those we’re observing. Maybe it’s sympathy or its rarer cousin, empathy.

Throughout this show, Smith has held to his strengths: a bright palette, strong use of contrast, and arrangements that pull off the balancing act of being both offbeat (humorously so, in some cases) and just right.

And while tile has size limitations, Scott’s technique turns that into an asset. The resulting divisions within her pieces allow for slight skews and gaps when they are mounted, and those negative spaces become integral parts of the whole. On a base level, these are mosaics as well as photographs.
