WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

Ceramic artists Calder Kamin and Julie Malen present animals as playthings, companions, spectacle, and metaphor in their collaborative exhibition, “Urban Still Life,” on view at the KCAC’s Underground Gallery through June 10. The centerpiece installation contains 26 sculptures by both artists, and their other individual works are challenging and well-crafted as well. Being born out of a collaborative urge to document their experiences with animals, Kamin and Malen have tugged at a thread of how humans relate to animals.

With and Against the Grain: Shannon White

Shannon White’s work is inspired by graffiti, but not of the confrontational/territorial sort. It’s definitely of the “I can’t help but create, and I hope you’ll stop and look” variety.

The Mystery of Beauty, and Vice Versa: Teresa Magel

Teresa Magel’s work — punctuated with flowers, bees, butterflies and other images of fragile beauty — is a consciously chosen, unironic homage to her view of the feminine ideal, be it in the ballroom or the dance hall.

SUSPENDING THE VIEWER

Tim Forcade strives for a dichotomy in his work between “photographic realism and ambiguous abstraction,” and with a background in painting — abandoned decades ago — he presents contemporary work that shows the culmination of an odyssey through technological processes. His latest exhibition and book, “Spectacular Uncertainties,” captures this vision.

Rising Flat: Luke Firle

Whether in two dimensions or three, Firle’s signature touches come through: intense color, the interplay of hard and soft shapes and a constant juxtaposition of the constructed and the organic.

EPIC SWIRLS, CONTROLLED ENERGY

The energy of Abstract Expressionism meets graphic precision in Clint Metcalf’s “Tensionism” paintings, which at first sight, belie the meticulousness that reveals itself when given longer meditation.

AN EXHIBITION OF VISUAL PUZZLES

Nancy Morrison’s “Reflections” touches upon the artist’s past and current life. The exhibition, on display at the Kansas City Artists Coalition through March 26, sets a fascinating visual tone.

PAINTINGS WITH A VISCERAL PRESENCE

Robert Quackenbush considers structure in the paintings in his exhibition “Load Bearing,” on display at the Kansas City Artists Coalition’s Mallin Gallery through March 26.

PAINTING: BREATHING

An Architect Finds Creative Renewal in Art Line is a key quality in any work of art. Drawn or implied sight directors play off of each other, create space, and define forms to present balance and add movement to a composition. Pure lines, sections of theoretical points aiming infinitely in a single direction, can stand [...]
