Skidmore, who is concentrating mostly on shawls (one of which is pictured above) of late, weaves both softness and substance into her work. In her world, comfort and beauty are meant to be lasting commodities … and the products of both careful planning and sudden insight, woven together with a love of color and pattern.
Where Fun meets Funk-tion: Susan Speck
Speck delivers skewed fun not in spades, but in kitchenware and “Bone Guy” figurines, her take on Mexican Day of the Dead figures. Sometimes she combines the two, as in the Tim Burton-esque salt and pepper set pictured above. And yes, they’re fully functional; each of Speck’s creations is glazed for home use.
