ROLL CALL FOR BOOKS’ ROLE
“Pages” marks our love affair with print culture in this age of digitized information and technological screens, with work from 43 artists and including a number of “please touch” libraries of handmade books, ‘zines, sketchbooks, and other creations. Curator Amy Kligman presents a compelling exhibition that serves as an ode to print culture.
Scenes Real and Imagined: Judith G. Levy
Levy has cannibalized, digitized and recombined the real to create the fanciful, using images from real vintage postcards to create places that both exist and don’t, times and spaces both actual and imagined. And, in the process, she has opened the doors to all manner of dialogues about race, economy, history and culture.
LARGER SIGNS, COMMUNITY SIGNING
The 2009 Charlotte Street Foundation Visual Artist Fellows, Jaimie Warren, Dylan Mortimer, and Andrzej Zielinski, when evaluated as a whole, present work that encourages the general population to look at our everyday surroundings, make connections with neighbors, bring spirituality back into the conversation, and find ways to look at the machine and make it flesh.
(ARTKC365) Bringin’ da Fun(k): James Trotter
The overall effect is childlike (rather than childish), a sense reinforced by Trotter’s passion for vintage toys and his use of those toys in art installations. Throw in his vintage musical tastes, and the pattern becomes clear: There’s a safety in the familiar, even when it’s skewed and jumbled.
CHARLOTTE STREET FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2010 ARTIST AWARD WINNERS
The 2010 Charlotte Street Foundation Visual Arts Awards Fellows were announced January 27; congratulations to Ari Fish, Sonié Ruffin and Caleb Taylor. The annual award for Kansas City artists is in its 13th year. Always an unrestricted grant and currently worth $10,000, the CSF Visual Artist Awards has provided $487,000 in grants to date.
(ARTKC365) Sofa, So Fun: Adolfo Gustavo Martinez
Other pieces riff on everything from Cubism to the Shroud of Turin — a wide range, granted, but Martinez pulls it off in every case. And if there’s a streak of fun-poking in this line of paintings (and there is), Martinez comes by it honestly. After all, the entire series was born in response to what Martinez saw as an absurd situation.
