FIRST FRIDAY FOLLOW-UP: JULY 2011

Personal symbolism pervades a number of artists’ July exhibitions throughout the Crossroads. Matt Kuhlman takes a look at Andrew Batcheller’s paintings at Mojo, Lauren Brunk’s colorful pen-and-ink drawings at The b Gallery, the prints of Victor Cartatenga and Nicholas Naughton at Cara and Cabezas Contemporary, Jessica Simorte’s mixed-media house portraits at Plenum Space, and Robb Smigielski’s and Jamie Gray’s design works at 19 Below. Most work is on view through July or later.

The Power of Juxtapositive Thinking: Lori Wright

Lori Wright’s canvases are full of seemingly incongruous images, playing with and off each other. Fruit is a recurring theme, often in combination with renderings of animals. Rather than focusing on how the various elements are different, though, Wright hopes her viewers will look for ways to connect them; her work is on display at b gallery through the end of the month.

Renewal Notice: Jenny Hahn

True to Hahn’s inspiration and influences — her written list includes “meditation practice, yoga, biology, sacred geometry, Gnostic wisdom, and Expressionistic painters throughout history” — the paintings in “Intimate Universe” are suffused with qualities both bold and meditative.

(ARTKC365) Deck the Floors: Gail Bean

Take most artists’ works off the walls, put them on the floor and walk on them, and something along the lines of “ruckus” is likely to ensue. But a good portion of Gail Bean’s current show at b gallery — all of the pieces on the south wall, in fact — are designed to go underfoot.
