October 24, 4 p.m. When Worlds Collide — the Worlds of the Symphony and the Painter
Newton Mid-Kansas City Symphony Orchestra merges music with visual art featuring artists Rachel Epp Buller, Joesph Loganbill, and Andy Nugent. The first half of the concert invites audience participation as the orchestra plays “Secret Seconds” — second movements of several well known pieces not identified in the program. Audience members are asked to name the piece and composer and the winners will be eligible for a drawing for a painting from the second half.
During the playing of Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Musorgsky, several local artists will be painting on the stage. Musorgsky’s piece depicts a stroll through a gallery of paintings of various titles such as “The Old Castle,” “Ballet of Chicks,” “The Catacombs,” and “The Great Gate of Kiev." The audience can watch the artists’ works unfold as the music is being played. Held in Bethel College Memorial Hall, with guest conductor Thomas W. Douglas of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
