September 25, 6-9 p.m. BREAD! KC Sunday Soup Day Bread! is a public dinner designed to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund new and emerging projects. At each Bread! event, participants pay an entrance fee of $10 and receive a ballot; after a hearty dinner of homemade soups and Farm to Market bread, diners vote on projects presented by artists in person. The artist who receives the most votes receives the door money (less $10 seed for the next dinner) and speaks at a future Bread! to update about their project. La Cucaracha Press (Nick Naughton) is a former Bread! recipient; his studio is a new incarnation of what INKubator Press was for the community and is located in City Arts. To RSVP for Bread!, pleaes write to breadkc@gmail.com (Sean Starowitz et al).

September 2, 6-9 p.m. Gallery Sneak Peak: Selections from the Sean Kelley Collection Take a look at the renovation progress at City Arts (the gallery and PopShop are 90 percent complete), see what's for resale from Kelley's collection that will help fund the studios and exhibition space moving forward (Vito Acconci, Alice Aycock, Jasper Johns, and Roxy Paine, for example), and visit with resident artists: Brock DeBoer, Tabbetha McCale Evans, Joscelyn Himes, and La Cucaracha Press (Nicholas Naughton, formerly of INKubator Press). The Print Factory Collective, a mobile public art intervention, will be making free prints on hand-crafted presses in the PopShop, too.

"A Japanese term for the sound of chit-chat, Pecha Kucha is a creative presentation event that brings the Kansas City art and design community together in a fun, loose environment. A quick paced presentation style of 20 slides at 20 seconds each slide keeps both the presenters and the crowd on their toes. Pecha Kucha is a big hit across the globe — now held in over 420 cities. Presenters are as varied as the presentation topics, and always keep the crowd entertained and engaged with their weird, inspiring and fresh perspectives!" Doors open at 7:30, and presentations begin at 8:20 p.m.

Jeanne Quinn: Ceramic In(ter)ventions
"The exhibition presents her signature artistic hybrid installations that combine porcelain in dynamic dialogue with unexpected mediums, including paint, electricity, and — perhaps most unexpectedly — balloons. The weight and balance of these inventive works join the awkward to the elegant; the sublime to the everyday; a sense of fragility with the gravity of form."

LEEDYVILLE
Group Tenant Show: "Jim Leedy, the Godfather of the Crossroads Art District, founded the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in 1985. His vision was to initiate a thriving community of artists who could live and work together in downtown Kansas City. Leedy renovated the building by converting the main level into a multi-gallery art center, while renting studio spaces to artists on the floors above. Before the area acquired its familiar name as the Crossroads Art District, the building tenants coined the unofficial name “Leedyville” to the young but emerging art community. In keeping with the history of the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center, this group show exhibits work by the artists who currently reside in “Leedyville” and who keep the authentic nature of Kansas City’s art community alive."

"This collection of black and white portraits was inspired and supported by Uplift Organization, Inc. Their goal is to deliver to the homeless those basic human needs, care and compassion that are not usually received from other organizations. The Kansas City based organization functions 100% through volunteers and is committed to be non-judgmental, non-denominational, non-government subsidized. The intention of exhibiting this collection is to expose and understand each individual’s story; to encourage the homeless to come out of the shadows and into the light of day so we can celebrate the humanity that is our common connection. The proceedes from the sales of the portraits and books will 100% support Uplift and their mission."
