Erica Mahinay received her BFA in painting and art history from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2008, and has recently completed a yearlong studio residency through Urban Culture Project. She has shown at Paragraph Gallery, the Syringe, and the KCAI Crossroads Gallery. Her painting-constructions highlight parallels between how painting and memory function, recognizing both as fabrications which have the ability to divulge or dismantle truth. Utilizing the familiarity of daily objects with an unconventional sense of materiality, she creates confusion between physical and pictorial space in a way that mimics psychological and cultural tendencies to mingle the past with present, fact with fiction, reality with invention. Erica is currently attending a two-month residency at Vermont Studio Center after receiving and Inspiration grant from the ArtsKC Fund (September 2010).
