Weigh In:
What Do Johnson County's Artists Need?
Take a survey to talk about what kind of studio and exhibition space is needed in Johnson County. Artist and project founder Nicole Emanuel is working on non-profit paperwork and a final business plan for potential lenders to help develop a potential new studios, exhibition, and event space on Newton Street in Overland Park, Kansas, and she would like your valuable input. Do you live or work in Johnson County and need art studio space that's outside the Crossroads or West Bottoms, for example? How important is it to you to have exhibition space closer to home, if so? No matter where you live, is there a need for another metropolitan anchor spot for the area's large arts community? What do you want to see happen in your community? Back on May 12, Emanuel, with the Arts Council of Johnson County and Arts and Recreation Foundation of Overland Park, hosted a building preview of the space (listed in the Review calendar digest), and if you would like more information, please email the director of the Arts Council of Johnson County (directorartsjoco@sbcglobal.net). Your data is crucial and appreciated. To access the survey click on the link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2011_artists_survey
Surveys are requested by July 8, 2011; please note, no personal or contact information collected will be distributed or shared

Driving Downtown
photographs by Andrea Clark: "This collection of photographs explores the presence of highways in urban space. Downtown Kansas City, Missouri, is frequently defined as 'The Loop,' a small area of the city encircled by the intersection of four highways. Described as an island, 'The Loop' is perceived as being isolated from the city beyond its boundaries. These photographs are an attempt to render this implicit sense of separation caused by the highway as a built structure within urban space."

Daniel Maidman, "Jade Street," oil on canvas, 24" X 30". From the gallery: "Landscapes, or views of nature found within the United States, have always played a significant influence in American art. During the 1820's Landscape painting came to dominate the American art scene. Artists began to depict the country's beautiful and sometimes untamed landscape with the new nation's growth and prosperity. This movement soon gave way to artists who were painting the American wilderness as it was seemingly disappearing. Industrial development began to push westward, and the American public became increasingly interested in the far reaches of the continent. Artist began to depict the far reaches of the Rockies and the Sierra Mountains. At the turn of the century, a group of New York artists soundly rejected the beautiful pastoral subjects. Although similar to the impressionist, this group of artist were strictly interested in the truly gritty urban scenes that were uniquely American." Image: courtesy of the gallery

We visited with the director and board president of the Spiva Arts Center, along with other artists whose homes were lost to the tornado. This installation is made up of material that was a part of their lives. There will also be a series of photographs and stories of these individuals that reflect what they have endured. We honor these and the countless others who have survived and those who did not." Jessica Simorte, "Worth The Wait," 669 film and string, 3 3/8" x 4 1/4". From the artist: "I am driven by my interest in human emotion and relationships. My current work explores how specific environments can affect those emotions and interactions. I am interested in the spaces where we keep our most personal items, thoughts and feelings. The most obvious and relatable example of this type of space is a house. It’s undeniable that our surroundings shape us, and for whatever reason, I seem to be more attached to my surroundings than anyone I know. This body of work is an ongoing process to dissect the relationship I have with my home." Image: courtesy of the gallery and artist

Brook Hsu, "Painting," oil on canvas, 18" x 24". From the artist: "I never thought that I would be making the work that I am making now, but knowing that I am one who prefers to follow her heart, I guess it makes sense that I never thought this through. I want to consciously acknowledge an effort of mine to leave my ideas, intentions, and inspirations in my studio. My hope in doing this is that nothing be held above the viewer's experience. You are now this work's priority. I work slowly. I believe in the importance of trying to understand the space and the object (all minutiae such as: surface, texture, area, weight) in something like a piece of paper or block of wood before any medium is applied to its surface."
