Sue Adams' art begins at the distant line where earth meets sky ... and moves up from there.

I am continually inspired by the sky and all its infinite variations of the sun and clouds, writes Adams, one off the current group of featured artists at ARTichokes in Leawood. I enjoy traveling all over the states and abroad, always observing the horizon in hopes of seeing something I can use later in the studio.  I paint with my memory of these moments.

Works such as Tallahassee Tree No. 3, the image at the top of this post, aren't necessarily sky-centric. The sky is always there, though, whether as backdrop or as visual destination.

In keeping with Adams' practice of observation and recall, her paintings are infused with that soft-edged sense of memory, even dream. While they are impressions of specific locations, both here and around the country, they aren't visually chained to any one spot. That allows (or, rather, encourages) viewers to layer Adams' paintings over their own experiences, thereby making each interaction personal and private.

That encouragement is enhanced by the presence of paths alongside or into the trees in many of Adams' works; the eye is drawn in, and the mind takes over when the journey begins to extend beyond the image on the canvas.

Past the horizon, if you will ... and isn't that where all the best adventures begin?

  1. Where does Sue Adams reside? Is she a Kansas artist?

  2. She is KC >> http://www.phnxgallery.com/page/page/3614579.htm
If you want to find her to talk or to buy some of her work, contact the gallery mentioned in this (Steve's) article or the Blue Gallery (KC), which Google tells me has also hosted her work.
