FOURTH/FINAL FRIDAY CALENDAR DIGEST, MAY 2011

May 26 — June 2

JodiBrown

Work by Jodi Brown is on exhibition, opening May 27, at The Invisible Hand in Lawrence. From the artist: "My work is a reaction against kitsch, contrasting the day to day reality of lived experience with cultural and personal fantasy. To sentimentalize — as well as eroticize, commoditize, and romanticize — life is to deny unpleasant realities and to exclude conflicting perceptions, so that the constructed veneer adjusts the picture of our histories to reflect a constant string of good times unmarred by boredom, anger, unhappiness, u...gliness, or anxiety. Ultimately, photos and other cultural ephemera treated in these ways are no longer a record of our histories and events, but a new creation occupying the space of truth; like retouching a photograph, kitsch creates an altered record of reality. A composite record must include the complexities and failures beyond the facade — the contact sheet rejects — but the tendency in American media culture is to project an inoffensive common denominator to the exclusion of all other representation. We must reject the impulse to disregard that which we find disturbing. What is truly disturbing is the denial of ugliness; the exclusion of the inherently unsettling leaves those who find no reflection of their own experience feeling unworthy of representation, both physically and psychically. 'No Jacket Required' is a compilation of images derived from authors’ book jacket photos. The images portray the churning realities of absurdity, sexuality, insecurity, and futility that lay beneath the glossy veneer. In breaking apart and reassembling cultural output, I am determined to engage as participant in — and not just receptacle for — the creation of American cultural identity." The Books of Lucille Vann
Anative of Lawrence, Kansas, 95-year-old Lucille Vann created themed scrapbooks which span 70 years of American history. She started making scrapbooks while her husband was serving in WWII, stopped and started again in 1980 when someone bought one of her books from the '40s. The scrapbooks cover a broad range of themes including iconoclastic images of advertizing and fashion from the decades as they evolve, what it has meant to be black in America, and zines about the history of slavery.
