May 6, 7-9:30 p.m. Images of 'Emancipation Station'
Artist Rachael Jane presents a projection on the vacant building at 1820 Wyandotte Street (Crossroads/Kansas City, Missouri) of about 50 images of homeless women and their children as a benefit for the Midtown shelter, Emancipation Station, operated by True Light Family Resource Center; Pastor Alice Piggee-Wallack, founder of the shelter, will be on hand to accept (tax-deductible) donations and to answer questions. Two years ago, Jane, a Parkville-based photojournalist, was assigned to take magazine pictures of women and children who frequented Emancipation Station and was deeply moved by what she saw. After forging a relationship with Pastor Piggee-Wallack, Jane worked for more than a year to document many homeless women and children’s stories through photographs.

Rachael Jane, photograph: "Nicole Hendricks prepared to leave Emancipation Station, a day shelter for women. She is moving to an apartment after being homeless for over two months with three children. With the help of Emancipation Station she had scraped enough assistance money together to cover a downpayment on an apartment, her challenge going forward is how to provide the next meal." JohnRaux_Whole2

John Raux, from "Whole" series; from the artist: "My artwork is a balancing act that mimics my meditation. The paintings have two parallel circular sides emerging in tandem with one another. The colors and forms cross reference and play with the viewers memory as only one horizon can be seen at a time. The work is displayed in windows so that there is an external and internal view. During the opening and by appointment, the internal work can be seen. Over the course of the show, the paintings will flip and seemingly change sequence while revealing to the outside viewer the interior side of the work." Image: courtesy of the artist

SteveBrisendine_Jamahiriya (plenum 5-6)

Steve Brisendine, Jamahiriya," acrylic on canvas, 15" x 30", 2011. From the artist: "In this show, everything is reduced to one color and one shape per painting. Abstraction at its purest? In a sense, perhaps. Then again, this just might be my first (and perhaps only) foray into representation. In a sense, it’s still viewer-dependent — but any symbols seen here have (or once had) fixed meanings in the 'real' world. One viewer sees a long green rectangle; another sees a Libyan flag. One sees a yellow square; another, a banner standing for 'Q' in the international signal flag alphabet. Two black diamonds? They might mark a ski slope you don’t want to tackle if you’re a beginner. Each piece, to members of the target culture or subculture, represents a form of communication: an ideal, an admonition, a request … perhaps even a declaration that no prisoners will be taken. To that end, each piece’s title is a hint at the symbol." Image: courtesy of the gallery and artist

RitaClark_IowaOne

Rita Clark, "Iowa One," cotton, silk, hand woven, 40" x 40" x 3", 2009. From the gallery: "'Being surrounded by Rita Clark's work transports the viewer to an intricate environment. The materials she uses are transformed from the obvious, at first seeming amorphous and dreamlike, combining structure with fragility. The details sharpen into the various knots, inter-weavings, frays and gradations, when one's field of vision is completely taken over,' says Colleen Burner, Kansas’ City-based artist and writer." "Rhei is a research studio designed to reallocate surpluses between the field of contemporary art and other industries. Starting with a problem, Rhei's team of interdisciplinary artists and theorists produce a unique document or composition consisting of images, texts, videos, and audio. Rhei's approach is to poetically upend the conditions of the problem, thereby opening up space for new possibilities. Rhei's compositions do not contain solutions, but rather offer original contexts from which to proceed."
