FOURTH/FINAL FRIDAY CALENDAR DIGEST, AUGUST 2010

August 26 — 29, 2010

Sighn3

Sighn is the art moniker of multi-identitied artist Matthew Hoffman, whose work is part of a solo exhibition opening at Wonder Fair during Lawrence, Kansas's inagural Final Friday art walk August 27. Image: courtesy of the gallery

August seems to be the fastest month; back to school vibes push it forward, and Labor Day looms as the official "end of summer," no matter what the thermometer says. Chalk it up to some collective love of alliteration, but there are two new Final Friday communities getting their art scenes organized for the specific day of the month known as Final Friday.

The Downtown Fine Arts League in Lawrence, Kansas, is promoting about 30 open venues on the 27th; a full list is here, courtesy of their organization, and we've listed the places that we have (and usually do!) heard from directly. This map link (sent through Facebook by Lawrence friends) has things in alphabetical order and shows the general clustering.

Out in Wichita, Kansas, Final Fridays are a longer-standing tradition, and most of our listings come courtesy of musician/artist Wade Hampton, who acts as an information-funnel for lots of the artists and venues out there — however, there are too many for us to keep up with lately, and so we provide this PDF map and list from the Wichita Arts Council and Downtown Wichita Development Corporation and will be filling in details about whose work is where later, from the main calendar.

Closer to Review Publishing's home base (or at least within the one-hour-drive range), Parkville, Missouri, is hosting its own Final Fridays events, while ARTichokes puts on a usual Friday open studios and a couple of Kansas City, Missouri, galleries launch their seasons (such as Greenlease and Pi).

*Review was remiss not to include the Gallery of Art & Design at University of Central Missouri, as well as the Salina Art Center (Kansas), earlier — which both hosted exhibition events on Thursday (their usual days). Scroll down to "recently opened" for more information.

Sighn2

Artist statement: "Matthew Hoffman, who works under the moniker Sighn, speaks of the vulnerability of emotions and materializes via text-based objects, hoping to connect us as humans. He states that “the pieces tend to deliver a hug, a pat on the back, or a chuckle.” By using immediate and fleeting phrases, one is able to absorb the stream of consciousness continuously running through his work. His phrases are melancholic and elegiac, while simultaneously leaving the viewers feeling therapeutically better about themselves." Image and quoted text: courtesy of the gallery
