Said it before. Sure I'll say it again.

It bears repeating, though: The difference between photography that works and photography that doesn't work can be as small as a moment in time.

Capture it, and you're golden. Miss it, even by a hair, and the result will feel off, even if it's not something a viewer can immediately identify.

Marilyn Lyons is dedicated to finding those moments ... and to being open to them, no matter where she is.

Although going on trips to photograph new and exciting things is fun, you don’t have to travel beyond your own back yard to shoot some wonderful photos, writes Lyons, one of the current featured artists at Images Art Gallery in downtown Overland Park. You will find things you didn’t know were there, like the beautiful yellow lily with the glow of the early morning light, the butterflies surrounding the bush in your backyard, the dew on the neighbor’s rose blossom, or the waterfall of flowers of the spiraea bush.  Just stop, take a moment, and observe.

Pretty Pink Rose (pictured above) and Lyons' other photographs put that philosophy into lovely visual form.

In this shot, everything is transitory: The dew, the light, even the flower itself (over a slightly longer span).

Yes, the rose might have been equally pretty with dry leaves and under a different angle of light. But it wouldn't have been the same as it is in this shot ... and a moment would have been missed.

The Japanese haiku masters (particularly Basho) understood that. So, clearly, does Lyons. More importantly, she has put that understanding into practice.
