I'm sending you (and myself) to a show I haven't yet seen; must be a First Friday. (Ah, the freedom of being a columnist rather than a reviewer ...)

There are, however, three things I can say with confidence about TiffersTanTrum, Tiffany Sappenfield's show of paintings opening tonight at the Plenum Art Space in the East Crossroads. (If you miss the opening reception, the paintings are up until late this month and can be viewed by appointment.)

The first is based on the show's promotional image, pictured above. Looking at its bright, almost cartoonish quality, it's clear that the self-taught Sappenfield has her Pop Art shoes laced up tight ... and they look good on her.

The second thing, continuing the Pop Art theme and working in Sappenfield's outlooks on life and the creative process, is that there's going to be much more going on in her work than can be revealed in a quick scan.

Ever since I can remember, I have done the opposite:  non-conformed, mis-matched, re-purposed, rebelled, she writes. If it was ugly, to me it was classic and vice-versa.  I am raunchy before my time, harmlessly malicious, perverse, punk, retro, crass, and plagued with the packrat curse.  I am at home in the city.  I like dirty streets.  I like rain.  I like steaming manholes, black crows overhead, and taxis.  The expressions of a homeless person can change everything about your day…your thoughts, feelings, temper, mannerisms, gratitude, you name it.  The grunge of the urban scene is beautiful to me.  Being that I can't narrow anything down in my world, I have many ways in which I choose to express myself, and by doing that I hope to inspire others to jump on the non-conformist bandwagon, and express it on.

The third thing I can say with confidence about this show is purely subjective — that I'm already hooked by Sappenfield's visuals and philosophies, and that TiffersTanTrum is now a destination for tonight's art walk.

Yes, as ever, that's a hint ...
