Ah, First Friday, when your occasionally humble correspondent often gets to write up shows he hasn't yet seen outside of the news releases.
It's not so much a review, then, as Hey, this looks cool. Let's all go see this tonight.
What Have You, Hannah the Mott's show at Plenum Art Space in the East Crossroads, is a must-stop-in for several reasons:
(Yes, Mott puts a "the" in the middle of the name. We'll all pause now to sing "All the Young Dudes," and then get on with the reasons.)
1. It's her first solo show in Kansas City. Mott, who has been the Plenum's director, has been concentrating on showing other people's art rather than her own.
2. It's her last show in Kansas City for the foreseeable future. Mott has been accepted to graduate school in the UK, so this is her fond farewell to the city.
I love Kansas City and I love the people of Kansas City, writes Mott, whose work will be viewable by appointment after tonight's opening. The time I have spent within the Kansas City art scene has been a fantastic learning experience that I would not trade for the world. As a 'swan song' I would like to display paintings I have worked on during my last year as Plenum Space Gallery Manager.
Which brings up Point 3: Mott's art.
If the rest of the show is anything like today's featured mixed-media piece, W.H.Y. # 2, it's going to be a bittersweet goodbye. Bitter in that Mott's eye for color, composition and intense detail (the piece is only 11 inches by 8 inches) will be missed ... and sweet in that at least people have a chance to interact with the work and its creator before she leaves.
So ... yeah. This looks cool. Let's go see this tonight.
