FIRST FRIDAY CALENDAR DIGEST

Crossroads Art District and other regional venues, March 4 — 11

LoraJost_CompositionWithGoose(bethel 3-5)

Lora Jost, "Compostion with Goose," clayboard drawing, 12" x 12", 2009, is part of an exhibition of her new work in three mediums (clayboard, collage and mosaic), "Linked in Spirit," opening March 5 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Fine Arts Center Gallery at Bethel College in mid-Kansas. From the artist: "I am drawn to themes that are mundane, whimsical, and socially urgent, and like to mix them around to find how they link in spirit. While based on experiences, my images are never realistic-looking; a bit of fantasy always comes into play. And sometimes I abandon “reality” altogether by creating my own characters in scenes that are fully imaginary. But even these are intended to say something tangible about how special (or beautiful or infuriating or ridiculous) this ordinary old world really is." Image: courtesy of the gallery

Kansas City's First Friday in March could be described as "overbooked," but Review considers that a good thing. There are some one-time highlights, such as the architecture students' Bud Prize reception at the AIA-KC, and the 2010 Cultures Without Borders exhibition (Friday and Saturday only) at Pi Gallery (its final show). Two other show-shuffles have happened since last month, namely that the Ripe group exhibition has moved to the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center and the photos of Alex Lovell-Smith from Mercy Seat to Moxie.

In addition to Kerry James Marshall's being in our region, Dan S. Wang is in Kansas City this week and calling for artists' participation (see Kansas City Art Institute listing below; his visit is being co-sponsored by the Charlotte Street Foundation). Speaking of CSF, March 3 is also the final artists' information session for *you are HERE (proposals due March 15; see our artist calls section for more information about that and other opportunities with deadlines this week and beyond — including a call for exhibitions at the University of Kansas Art & Design Gallery).

There are also new ArtBoards in the Crossroads (on top of Missouri Bank) by Allan Winkler and Michael Sinclair (and the south branch of the bank is sporting new permanent word-work by Review Studios artist Archie Scott Gobber). The Downtown Council, Art in the Loop, has installed the latest ARTwall at 13th and Grand — Forever People, by Ascot J. Smith. This work even has an audio component, which can be accessed by dialing 816-412-1798 then pressing 111 and then #. Episodes are updated every-other Monday, with the next one due March 15th.

Note that the Sherry Leedy gallery is hosting both Thursday and Friday receptions for its two new exhibitions, that it's the last weekend for the adult comedy version of the "Spooky Dog" production at la Esquina, and that we will be adding new information here as it is received.

All images link to artists' or gallery pages (except in rare circumstances).

Learn to Teach: Community Arts
Artists, learn how to teach and share what you know. This public lecture series is part of a course at KCAI (in which each student will design, plan, and teach a short workshop at the Southeast Community Center in Swope Park, Kansas City, Missouri). The overall goal is to teach artists how to be excellent teachers in a community setting, though some lectures will focus on more general classroom basics). These Thursday sessions are open to the public, so all artists are encouraged to learn about sharing their talents with the community at large. More information about the course's instructors is posted the week of their lectures here on the KCAI site. All lectures are free and take place on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. in the Epperson Auditorium of Vanderslice Hall on the KCAI campus (except for February 11th's lecture, which will be at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art). Funded by a KCAI Outstanding Project Award and an ArtsKC Fund Inspiration Grant. Remaining sessions:

March 4, 11:30 a.m. Communities with Disabilities, with Beth Sarver, who is "an artist, educator, community builder, youth advocate, performance artist and independent social activist. She earned a B.F.A. degree in sculpture from the University of Kansas. Sarver has taught at Storytellers Inc., Accessible Arts Inc. and Chameleon Arts and Youth Development, gaining experience with atypical students in non-traditional classroom settings. She has designed, developed and implemented dynamic experiential learning programs through the arts from maximum-security juvenile detention centers to the Oregon Trail. Sarver has worked as a mentor for the Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration and served as an advisory board member for the ROYAL Project (Raising Our Youth As Leaders). Currently, she is working to develop an artists as mentors program. Additionally, she is the program consultant for Accessible Arts Inc., where she is developing collaborative partnerships with Kansas State School for the Blind, Kansas City Hip Hop Academy, YWCA, Mosaic Brain, Synergy Youth Services, Kemper Contemporary Art Museum and KU Fine Art Department."
March 11, 11:30 a.m. The power of art in communities, with José Faus

Current Perspectives Lecture Series
In honor of the college’s 125th anniversary, most of the speakers selected for the spring 2010 series are alumni of KCAI. Unless otherwise noted, all lectures are free and will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursdays in Epperson Auditorium in Vanderslice Hall, 4415 Warwick Boulevard.

March 4, 7 p.m. Dan S. Wang is an artist, printer and writer. His texts have been published in magazines, journals, and catalogues worldwide. His drawings, prints, sculptures and other projects have been exhibited in two solo exhibitions and in more than 25 group exhibitions. Along with seven others, he co-founded Mess Hall, an experimental cultural space in Chicago. Wang regularly collaborates with a range of art groups, activists and researchers in creating exhibitions, publications and events. He will be in Kansas City from March 3 through 5 in collaboration with the KCAI Printmaking and Interdisciplinary Arts departments and the Charlotte Street Foundation. He would like to work with artists in Kansas City to research and discuss local topics and issues, and materials from those will be explored through a collective art project during his visit. March 3, 9 a.m. at KCAI, there will be a public meeting for brainstorming and to establish a plan of action; March 4 will be a work day (and participants can choose to spend any part of that and may come and go depending on other obligations), with a meal gathering before the lecture; March 5, starting at noon at the Paragraph Gallery downtown, will be the exhibition and event. Artists are invited to participate and can find out more at Wang's blog.

March 5, 6-7 p.m. Artist talk with Kerry James Marshall : John Brown's Body: The Representation of Black Bodies as Revolutionary Gesture. Preceeded by cocktail reception from 5 to 6 p.m. "A nationally renowned painter, installation artist, and filmmaker, Marshall reflects and approaches African American culture, identity, and history from the Civil Rights to today, drawing from and weaving a history of black experience into his narratives. The artist states the subject of his art stems from the social climate of his youth: 'You can't be born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1955 and grow up in South Central Los Angeles near the Black Panthers headquarters and not feel like you've got some kind of social responsibility.... That determined a lot of where my work was going to go.' While based on a broad range of art-historical references, from Renaissance history painting to black folk art, from El Greco to Charles White, a striking aspect of his paintings is the emphatically black skin tone of his figures; a development the artist says emerged from an investigation into the invisibility of blacks in America and the unnecessarily negative connotations associated with darkness."
