Regular readers of this space — okay, anyone who runs into me on the street for more than two minutes — know how much I love to pontificate.

Not today.

Today, I'll leave the exposition to people who, while long absent from this planet, live on through their words and their faith ... and continue to inspire people today in all sorts of ways.

Greg Cissell's Draws Me Closer, on display through March 10 at Imago Dei Arts Center, is drawn (literally and thematically) from the Bible. Cissell's work is simple, stark and at the same time passionate.

John 20:27-29 (the work) is pictured above. The passage below, taken from the Gospel of John, tells the story (and also explains the origin of the phrase "Doubting Thomas").

27Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."

28Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"

29Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." (New International Version)

That's not to say, "Don't go to Cissell's show; just believe that it's there and that it's worth seeing." See the show ... and if something appeals or intrigues in more than a visual sense, Cissell has provided plenty of references.

(This isn't a sermon, mind you. I leave those to others, too.)

  1. The Imago Dei Art Gallery though small is refreshingly simple and a perfect venu for Greg's moving images.

  2. Found a G. Cissell Graphite today from past. Very good. I think it may be from school days but it is not dated.
