THIRD FRIDAY CALENDAR DIGEST

Downtown time!

ClareDoveton_UntitledLandscape3(bnim 2-19)

Clare Doveton, "Untitled Landscape 14," oil on canvas, 36" x 42", is part of a series of 18 new paintings from 2010 that will be on display in the BNIM streetview window gallery of their offices in the historic Power and Light Building. Originally from Lawrence, Kansas, Doveton moved to New York City in 1994, where she received her BFA in fine arts painting at Parsons School of Art and Design. During the past 15 years, she has shown her work in New York City, San Francisco, as in the midwest. In 2004 she moved her studio back to Kansas. Join her and the architects and staff of BNIM for an opening reception February 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. Image: courtesy of the artist

Third Friday is Kansas City's downtown venues' opening night — ArtsKC, Paragraph/Urban Culture Project Space, Trap and a new exhibition at BNIM —  as well as in Johnson County, Kansas, and Electromediascope at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Saturday is the 120th anniversary gala for the Kansas City Art Institute, featuring a performance by Nick Cave (learn more here), and throughout the coming week are the usual round of free, educational lectures concerning contemporary visual art.

Finally, this weekend (Friday-Sunday) provides your free chance (unless you're already a member who naturally enjoys the privilege all the time) to see Magnificent Gifts for the 75th; this capstone exhibition of 120 of the 400 generous gifts and promised gifts made in honor of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art's anniversary is on view through April 11.
