Give yourself a Valentine by visiting the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art's new Magnificent Gifts for the 75th exhibition, which opens on Saturday. Saturday night is also the annual fundraising auction for the Kansas City Artists Coalition, and, of course, Second Friday is Art Walk night in Kansas City, Kansas. The Lawrence, Kansas, galleries are hosting opening receptions this weekend, too, and we've listed some great lectures and programs coming up soon (mostly on the 18th and 25th, so there are some tough planning choices to make), including the Kansas City Art Institute's 125th anniversary gala (on the 20th).

The Arts Council of Johnson County and the Kansas City Volunteer Lawyers and Accountants for the arts are hosting forums and workshops in the coming weeks, too, including one about the not-always-clear legal relationship between galleries and artists …

February 12 — March 10

AlexanderAustin_JazzMasters

Alexander Austin, "Jazz Masters," pencil drawing, is among his work being shown at the 6th Street Gallery through March 10 in "Earnest to Epic." Most people in Kansas City are familiar with Austin's large-scale murals, such as on the building of the Kansas City Call newspaper (18th and Woodland) or along the Troost corridor — and on a monumental and full-color scale along the south-facing wall of the Power & Light District (Grand Boulevard), an 18,000-square-foot commission in 2007. "The philanthropic artist has given his unique talent to inspire the lost and discouraged at City Union Mission with his mural titled: Journey of Hope, adorning the wall of the Mission’s new Christian Life Center. It's a kind of homecoming, bringing him back to the place he stayed when he was homeless two decades ago." Image and quoted text: courtesy of the gallery

"Presence" is a series of works composed of arrows, definite rectangles, indefinite quadrilaterals, faded textures and free-form circles.
