FIRST FRIDAY CALENDAR DIGEST
February's First Friday presents challenging choices

Heinrich Toh, detail from installation view, monoprint, cyanotype and van dyke print, dimensions variable, is part of "Morning Spring," opening February 5 at the Cocoon Gallery. "Inspired by heritage, tradition and fading customs, the exhibition examines cultural displacement resulting from relocation and travel. As memories seem to shift and change with the assimilation to his current environment, Toh's work provides a glimpse into what was once seemingly familiar." The weekend of February 4-6, especially First Friday on the 5th, is packed with visual art exhibition openings, cross-over events with music and performance, artists' talks and even Chinese New Year at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Also in Midtown on Friday, documentary photographs from an author and priest whose work has a social justice focus and has been featured in National Geographic open in an exhibition at the Greenlease Gallery at Rockhurst University.
There are two Haiti benefit exhibitions this weekend (and one coming February 19 to the Trap), and new exhibition openings at Base, Grand Arts, Keyhole, Mercy Seat, Plenum, Red Star and more. Saturday opens a retrospective exhibition at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art — Marc Leuthold's work from 1995 to 2010 — and there is a Kansas City-area Rocket Grant meeting for prospective applicants.
Review will continue to add items as more information becomes available. See preview images of work from exhibitions listed below in our art events section.

February 4, 11:30 a.m. Learn to Teach: Community Arts Diverse communities and how difference influences classroom motivation is this week's topic. Learn how to teach and share what you know. This public lecture series is part of a course at KCAI (in which each student will design, plan, and teach a short workshop at the Southeast Community Center in Swope Park, Kansas City, Missouri). The overall goal is to teach artists how to be excellent teachers in a community setting, though some lectures will focus on more general classroom basics). These Thursday sessions are open to the public, so all artists are encouraged to learn about sharing their talents with the community at large. More information about the course's instructors is posted the week of their lectures here on the KCAI site. All lectures are free and take place on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. in the Epperson Auditorium of Vanderslice Hall on the KCAI campus (except for February 11th's lecture, which will be at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art). Funded by a KCAI Outstanding Project Award and an ArtsKC Fund Inspiration Grant.
Current Perspectives Lecture Series
In honor of the college’s 125th anniversary, most of the speakers selected for the spring 2010 series are alumni of KCAI. Unless otherwise noted, all lectures are free and will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursdays in Epperson Auditorium in Vanderslice Hall, 4415 Warwick Boulevard.
February 4, 7 p.m. A presentation will be given by the 2009 Charlotte Street Foundation Visual Artist Award fellows Dylan Mortimer (’02 painting), Jaimie Warren (’02 printmaking) and Andrzej Zielinski, whose work is featured in an exhibition at the H&R Block Artspace through March 27. Mortimer has merged the iconographies and vocabularies of Christianity and hip-hop culture in an investigation of how religious beliefs, popular culture and social norms do and do not comfortably relate. Warren is a photographer, curator and performance artist who makes theatrical, humorous self-portraits in different scenarios and locations. Zielinski’s current work consists of paintings of laptops, paper shredders and ATM machines.

February 5, 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. Arts & Issues: The Kansas City Art Institute: 125 Years of Cultivating a Creative Community "As part of a year-long series on “What Makes Kansas City’s Arts Community Great,” Arts & Issues starts where it all began — with the Kansas City Art Institute. What began as a sketch club in 1885 has become one of the most influential institutions shaping our creative community today. Please join Milton S. Katz, Ph.D., professor of history at the Kansas City Art Institute and author of The Kansas City Art Institute: A Century of Excellence and Beyond and Mark Salmon, Ph.D. KCAI Vice President for Academic Affairs, for a discussion on how the school continues to honor the past while making a bold mark on the future." Arts & Issues is a bi-monthly networking and educational luncheon that is designed to broaden awareness of the arts and cultural history, policies, and issues, presented in partnership with The Central Exchange, The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, and the Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City. Free to Central Exchange members; registration for others $20. Please call or visit the Central Exchange site to RSVP.

February 5, 7:30 p.m. KcEMA Kcennctions — Night of Electronic Music and Visual Art "KcEMA KcEnnections brings together world-renowned artists from the region for a night of electronic music and visual art. The concert features two movements from Daniel Asia and Kip Haaheim’s Sacred and Profane, with video by Janet Davidson-Hues. The texts for portions of this piece are drawn from the sayings of Rabbi Nachman of Bratislav, a leader of the Hassidic movement in 18th century Poland. Paul Rudy will perform a variety of instruments as he accompanies tracks from his 2012 Stories CD series. Rudy calls the series 'a personal journey to come alive during an unprecedented time of awakening on our planet earth.' Douglass Crockwell’s animations, Glen Falls Sequence, with a newly composed soundtrack by David Dvorin, bring a startling visual element to the concert. Created over a nine-year period in the 1930s, the Glen Falls Sequence is the result of numerous experimental and unorthodox techniques of animation, supplemented by Dvorin’s layered electronic music. " Doors open at 7 p.m.; the concert is being held on the 5th floor, and a $5 donation is suggested.
