Third Friday starts on Thursday, with exhibitions opening at UMKC and UCM and a closing reception in Lawrence at Signs of Life. January 15, Holly Swangstu presents a room-sized installation at the Albrecht-Kemper in St. Joseph, which is opening two other exhibitions Friday evening, and downtown, the Charlotte Street Foundation's Urban Culture Project presents both an installation by Samantha Persons and a group exhibition by its resident studio artists. Saturday, the Dolphin opens a new show of work by represented artists, Cara & Cabezas Contemporary opens its doors, and Sunday, Larry Thomas's exhibition opens at the Epsten Gallery and Clare Doveton and Travis Presnell respond to writer Richard Rathwell in a show at the Bourgeois Pig in Lawrence.

January 18, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. KCAI Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day Join in this free program, open to all, held in Epperson Auditorium in Vanderslice Hall on campus. The program begins with a short documentary film about the Civil Rights movement in the United States, then Charles Coulter, former op-ed editor for The Kansas City Star, who has taught African American history at KCAI and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, will deliver one of King’s speeches. The program also will include an inspirational dance by Tori Sinclair, assistant director of advising and registration at KCAI. Guests are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch or they can purchase lunch at Café Nerman (located upstairs in Vanderslice Hall), and there will be a cake in honor of Dr. King. Participants will receive a free lapel button honoring him, too.
