SECOND FRIDAY CALENDAR DIGEST | Review

SECOND FRIDAY CALENDAR DIGEST

First Friday openings moved for holiday

Rachel Epp Buller, "Middle Friendship Star," relief print / montages with hand stitching, 2009, is part of "The Identity Series" showing at INKubator Press starting January 8. This body of work, says Buller, "marks the changes, overlaps, and transformations of identity that occur in the life of the family. Initially conceived as a grouping of representational portraits, the series later morphed into an abstracted idea of portraiture, taking as its formal basis one fingerprint of each member of our family. Printed individually, the fingerprints highlight unique genetic qualities; when layered, they can speak to the temporary masking of identity that occurs in the position of motherhood. In hand-stitched print blankets, issues of genetic difference overlap, literally and metaphorically, with larger implications of family position—individuality alongside and within familial identity. The most recent print 'quilts' combine the fingerprints with fragments of the representational portraits, further playing on issues of identity and likeness. These visual memoirs of motherhood use traditional patchwork quilting patterns to draw on a lengthy history of women’s artistic creativity and on my own Mennonite cultural heritage." Crossroads galleries are not calling in a snow day, so show your support for Kansas City's artists by braving the drifts. In addition to the new work opening January 8 and 9, the area's museums are back on regular schedule (weather permitting – some, like the Nerman, are closed if the school is; a quick phone call will insure your trip is worthwhile; numbers, addresses and web sites are listed in our calendar section): Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Spencer Museum of Art, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art (its Crossroads counterpart is open for Second Friday; the H&R Block Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute is closed for school holiday through the 12th).

(More images here.)

The Mercy Seat gallery is open during its usual hours, too, and showing Joshua Hoffine's photography. Other galleries, such as the Leedy-Voulkos, are keeping regular Saturday hours, and a few spots in Kansas City, Kansas, open their doors for Second Friday Art Walk.

It's also your last chance to see Andy Warhol's sparkling and sketched-on silkscreens in person at Union Station. The large-scale prints offer an impact that can't be replicated in an art book or postcard. The show is part of Arts Alive on Friday, as well as offering expanded Wine and Warhol hours Friday and Saturday evenings.

Be brave! Do it for art.

Thousands of stranded pets were rescued and then adopted into new homes across the United States.
