Athletic coaches have a saying: "You can't coach speed."

That doesn't mean one can't teach a fast athlete how to be more efficient, and therefore faster. It does mean that no amount of coaching will make a slow player fast. Speed is a gift; you have it, or  you don't.

Translated to art, the phrase might be, "You can't teach spark." In other words, instruction can help an artist increase technical skills. But no amount of teaching can impart the creative spark that sets the artist -- whether visual, literary or performing -- apart. It's a gift ... and in Anastacia Drake's case, it's a gift she has been given twice.

Drake, who will show new works tonight at the Scion LAB Gallery Space in the Crossroads, tells the story this way:

I have a 14-month old son. When I was pregnant, I lost all feeling from my elbows down. As a result, I could no longer hold a glass of water, let alone paint. My painting came to an abrupt stop. I got the feeling back when my son was about 6 months old. Doctors could give me no reasoning. As a result, I have just been working in many subjects, painting like crazy, making up for lost time. I feel inspired just because I have the ability to paint again.

The ability, and the gift, and a renewed appreciation for both.

Her new works are by turns cool and emotional, abstract and figurative, saturated and spare. (The oil-on-canvas Entwined, today's featured work, draws heavily from the first half of each of those pairs, from the color scheme to the sleek curves to the intricate composition.) Whatever her choice of subject matter, media or style, though, it's clear that Drake has made good on the second chance.

There won't be any second chance, though to see Artworks by Anastacia in this venue and with this lineup of works. This is a one-night-only show.

Some gifts, after all, are only given once.

  1. what a story. interesting that A. chose to put off painting during pregnancy instead of experimenting with feet- or mouth-brushholding, but of course, the technical virtuosity / learning curve might have just been too frustrating (and I suspect that there may have been other complication and choices involved), but I'm glad to know about this now and will be going on to strokeofred.

  2. [Is this a repeat comment? I can't tell if WP got it; it's back]:
