FOURTH FRIDAY ARTS

Keltie Ferris, "The Wrestler," oil, acrylic, sprayed paint on canvas, 80" x 80" inches, 2009, is part of 11 new large-scale abstract paintings in her first solo museum exhibition. Her "work has been included in numerous group exhibitions at galleries in New York, Chicago, Miami, and Los Angeles, as well as in Turin, Italy, and Berlin, Germany. The Brooklyn-based artist has been featured in solo and two-person shows at SUNDAY L.E.S. in New York and Kinkead Contemporary in Los Angeles." She will be present at the opening October 23 (6-9 p.m.) and also on October 24 for an informal and free walk-through discussion from 2 to 3 p.m., where you may learn more about this "postdigital painter." The extensive open studios coordinated through the Kansas City Artists Coaltion continues this weekend, with special hours at the gallery itself. The artists and samples of their work, along with studio hours, are at the Coalition's site. Friday in Kansas City brings a new solo exhibition opening at Kemper in the Crossroads (above) and the first of a two-part multi-media original music performance by Mark Southerland and a deep collaboration of artists and musicians.
Saturday is the Nerman Museum of Conteporary Art's premiere fundraiser and "collectors' favorite" (because you still have an art budget left after the Epsten gallery's UrbanSuburban last week!), as well as a new fundraising party and art auction for the Historic Northeast Cultural Arts Commission.
There is an opening at Signs of Life Gallery in Lawrence on Friday (today), on Monday at the Bourgeois Pig, and next Friday at the Lawrence Arts Center and Wonderfair (not to mention new exhibitions at the Spencer Museum opening this weekend); and in Kansas City, Missouri, Thursday brings the KCAI Current Perspectives lecture, as well as an evening opening at the UMKC Gallery of Art and the guest lecture at Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art in conjunction with a visit from Universal Limited Art Editions.
We've included some exhibitions that are closing soon and will have November's First Friday preview ready soon … along with a few new openings (some below) for "Fifth/Final Friday." See you out there!
